Jemima Stilwell

Artist Jemima Stilwell, followed a successful career in London's music industry with a move to Hay-on-Wye and motherhood.

Jemima’s work explores fragmented experiences, weaving together her current life and childhood memories. She loves the simple storytelling and direct quality of illustrations in children’s picture books; however, she is also influenced by abstract painters such as Roger Hilton and Roy Oxlade.

Her overriding interest has always been to explore what it is to be human: the joy, the humour, the trauma, the darkness and all the contradictions within us. She endeavours to capture this complexity in her paintings, taking the viewer on a journey of disjointed moments that are relatable and familiar, yet open to interpretation.

Jemima Stilwell studied Fine Art at Newcastle University. She lives and works in Hay-on-Wye and is a mother to three daughters.
