Jane Bennett

Jane Bennett artist in her studio

Much of artist Jane Bennett’s work is inspired by the ever-changing hills and skies of the Brecon Beacons where she lives and works, and by visits to the coast of West Wales. These pieces are grounded in an abstract sense of place and atmosphere rather than faithfully reproduced views.

Similarly the portraits Jane creates, derived from found photographs such as carte de visits, old school photographs and studio portraits, are often altered and manipulated. Clothing is changed, a gesture emphasised, the background is pared down; the sitter’s image is amended in some way so as to give them new identity.

Jane trained at Leicester College of Education, Cardiff College of Art and, more recently, she completed an MA at Swansea College of Art.
